What does identity mean? How do you recognize it?

I asked myself this when preparing my visa application.

Origin, religious affiliation. Can a passport photo show that?

Can a passport photo be manipulated to show different things, even if the origin is the same face?

Who is this person? Why do you want to know that? Is that important?
